Based on Social Security Agency for Health data, the number of cases of heart disease increased from 12.93 million in 2021 to 15.5 million in 2022. Basic Health Research data shows an increase in the prevalence of heart disease from 0.5% in 2013 to 1.5% in 2018. Based on IDAI data in 2023, between 45,000 and 50,000 babies are born with congenital heart disease out of 5 million babies born each year. In the 2022 Social Security Agency for Health Program Management and Financial Report, heart disease costs IDR 12.144 trillion with a total of 15 million patient cases.
National Cardiovascular Ceneter Harapan Kita (NCCHK) is a national referral hospital and national heart centre, serving patients with complex cases, including coronary, valvular, vascular, arrhythmia, paediatric, and congenital diseases. Based on data from the NCCHK Medical Records Installation from 2020-2022, the level of disease complexity at levels II-III at NCCHK is above 70%.
NCCHK has surgical and non-surgical intervention services, the number of which continues to increase in 2015-2019, handled by cardiologists and blood vessel specialists, thoracic, cardiac and blood vessel surgeons, anaesthesiologists, interventional radiologists, internal medicine specialists, cardiovascular consultants, other specialist doctors and other health workers.
As a national heart centre, NCCHK has a responsibility to continuously improve the quality of services provided to the public in line with advances in science and technology. The rapid advancement of medical science and technology has resulted in public demand for specialist doctors, particularly in the field of cardiology and blood vessels, capable of performing procedures in accordance with the latest technological developments.
NCC Harapan Kita, as the national provider of the cardiovascular network, is tasked with optimizing services at its provider hospitals. The cardiovascular network provider program is expected to address the mission of equitable national cardiovascular services and standardize the quality of cardiovascular services throughout Indonesia. It is also expected to facilitate access for patients with cardiovascular disease throughout Indonesia and reduce cardiovascular mortality and morbidity.
By September 2024, the network of care programs achieved the following:
Within the cardiac care network program, the national target for 2029 is to have 509 intermediate hospitals, 46 primary hospitals, and 14 full-time hospitals.
The Indonesia International Cardiovascular Summit was held for the first time in 2023 under the name The 1st International Cardiovascular Summit in Harapan Kita (ICS-HK) in 2023 which was held on November 10-11, 2023. Participants in the 2023 ICS-HK activities involved heart and blood vessel specialists, thoracic, cardiac and blood vessel surgeons, anesthesiologists, general practitioners, PPDS, invasive diagnostic and non-surgical intervention nurses (DI INB), operating room nurses, etc. totaling 327 offline participants and 53 online participants on November 10, 2023 and 325 offline participants and 73 online participants on November 11, 2023.
Then in November 2024, this activity changed its name to the Indonesia International Cardiovascular Summit (IICS) and was held on November 16-17, 2024. This activity was initiated by NCC Harapan Kita as a national referral center for heart and blood vessel diseases in Indonesia. Based on national health data, the prevalence of heart disease in Indonesia continues to increase, with the number of cases increasing every year. In an effort to improve the quality of cardiovascular health services and address the challenges of more complex heart care needs, NCCHK is committed to introducing the latest surgical technologies, including robotics. This activity aims to introduce new techniques and technologies to specialist doctors and other healthcare professionals so that they can be implemented in various hospitals in Indonesia.
In 2025, NCC Harapan Kita will once again hold the Indonesia International Cardiovascular Summit (IICS) to strengthen referral hospitals in Indonesia through the cardiovascular network hospital mentoring program. Knowledge transfer activities will be carried out through seminars and live demonstrations with speakers and live demonstration operators from abroad. The transfer of knowledge and live demonstrations will be carried out on various cardiovascular themes such as interventional cardiology, pediatric cardiology, robotic heart surgery, and heart transplantation. NCC Harapan Kita has been appointed by the Ministry of Health as a hospital that can perform heart transplants. Heart transplants in Indonesia are one of the medical procedures that are developing although currently still limited in Indonesia. NCC Harapan Kita can perform heart transplants, but due to the limited availability of donor organs, this procedure has not been carried out in Indonesia.
One of the biggest challenges is the lack of awareness about the importance of organ donation. To increase the number of donors, public education on the importance of donation is essential. Furthermore, knowledge transfer to medical and healthcare professionals is necessary to improve their skills and knowledge, ensuring that those performing the procedure have better competencies. NCC Harapan Kita has collaborated with the University of California, Los Angeles, to increase knowledge through education and training for medical and healthcare professionals. Knowledge transfer regarding heart transplantation is crucial to improve clinical skills and knowledge.
The invited participants consisted of cardiologists, thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons, vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, or cardiovascular consultant internists, invasive diagnostic and non-surgical interventional nurses, and operating room nurses. This is in line with the Minister of Health's directive that Cardiovascular Referral Network Hospitals have the task of developing invasive diagnostic and non-surgical interventional services in the field of heart and blood vessels as well as developing cardiac surgery services tailored to the level of difficulty. In addition, Network Hospitals must be able to improve their stratification with the competencies that must be possessed, namely by Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery and Non-Surgical Interventions. Therefore, human resources consisting of cardiologist, thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons, vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, or cardiovascular consultant internists, invasive diagnostic and non-surgical interventional nurses, and operating room nurses are the focus as participants in this activity.
